Dorothyann Strange - Right On Strange Photography
“I started by watching my mother with her Argoflex Twin-lens camera,” Dorothyann Strange says. “I still have it, sitting next to me at my computer where I can see it as I work on my photographs.”
Using photography for artistic expression, Dorothyann is drawn to the emotions felt while being in a place, observing people, or discovering something out of the ordinary. She works to replicate that emotion by putting a creative spin to the image in camera and through post-production. Anything that is intriguing, powerful, comical, dissonant, beautiful or strangely unsightly, she photographs. Portraiture, landscape, travel, creative, and street photography is all a part of her repertoire.
Two of Dorothyann’s most gratifying achievements in photography includes a commission to document the devastating results of a fire in the Klong Toey slum of Bangkok during her 3-month stay in Thailand in 2017. With Fr. Joe Maier, the co-founder and director of the Mercy Centre of Klong Toey, her photographs and his articles helped the fundraising efforts for the rebuilding of family homes and businesses. In 2016, she also designed a music CD, the CD cover, and a 12-page insert for Irish musician Brenda Castles’ album Indeedin You Needn’t Bother.

Dorothyann has participated in juried art and photography shows in Ohio and won Best of Show twice. Every year, Dorothyann participates in the Bloomington Photography Club’s Annual Juried Exhibit and in a number of other juried exhibits in Bloomington. She was also a part of the October Back Roads of Brown County Tour in 2018. Dorothyann is a member of the Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington, the Bloomington Photography Club (one of the largest photography clubs in Indiana), and Female Photographers of Etsy.

Dorothyann has sold her photography for 15 years, both online, and in stores/galleries and exhibits in Ohio and Indiana. She currently had framed prints, canvas prints, and greeting cards for sale at the Arts Alliance Center(AAC) in the Jackson Creek Shopping Center on College Mall Road in Bloomington, Indiana. She is willing to print any size of the images in the AAC that is not presently offered there. Prints are also available on RightOnStrange.etsy.com.

Dorothyann will be exhibiting with other members of the Bloomington Photography Club at the Monroe County airport in Bloomington. This is the first time the airport is hosting an arts exhibit and they are quite excited. A reception will be held on Friday, March 15th, 2024, from 5 pm to 8 pm. The exhibit will be an ongoing, ever-changing showcase of images! The displays include sports, photo journalism, landscape, street, macro, portrait, creative, nature, architectural, and of course, aeronautical images. Don’t miss it! Free admission.
