Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington (AAGB) Member

Carol Rhodes originally pursued art education as a student at Indiana University, but in doing so she found that her passion lay in creating art for personal enrichment rather than for financial gain. Consequently, she changed her major and began dedicating her artistic endeavors solely to personal growth and expression. Now retired from her career in technology training at Indiana University, she is nurturing her artistic spirit by immersing herself in the world of watercolor painting—a pursuit of hers for over 30 years. She finds inspiration in the beauty and serenity of the natural world, and she aims to capture that with the fluid beauty of water mediums. Carol’s artwork in watercolor and gouache celebrates all forms of life and is almost always based in outdoor elements. It is representational. She favors wet wash techniques, vibrant colors, and she works in mostly high-to-middle-key light ranges. She avoids making lines, instead defining forms by values. She also likes to create lost-and-found edges to further engage the viewer. Given these techniques, her work has been described as dreamy in quality. She uses photos as references but in most cases, assimilates various elements of multiple photos and adds imagination to create the final piece.

By leveraging her artistic talents along with organizational and advocacy strengths, she strives to make a meaningful contribution to the effort of creating a more livable, sustainable, and harmonious world.

Gallery Show – Depictions: Earth, Life, and Our Shared Responsibility  April 3-28, 2024

Artists for Climate Awareness is calling for 2-D and 3-D artwork to be displayed in a gallery exhibition April 1 – 28 at the Arts Alliance Center in the College Mall in Bloomington, IN We are proud to be offering this juried exhibition during Earth Month, and we anticipate exceptional patronage during that time.

Bloomington is the hot spot for viewing the 2024 total solar eclipse, and we expect a tremendous influx of tourists to be in town, especially around April 8th. (https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/indiana-2024-eclipse) We will be coordinating other climate awareness events related to this exhibition, including: a reception on April 12 featuring environmentally themed new music performed by an IU Jacobs School of Music ensemble; a pastel workshop by nature artist Avon Waters; and a climate-themed poetry and dance performance entitled “Stormwash: Climate Awareness” by Bloomington Writers Guild and Windfall Dancers, Inc. Artwork may be in any 2-D and 3-D medium. Artists must be Artists for Climate Awareness or Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington members, and can be from any state in the US. This year, artwork will be juried for impact. This means that artists may have created any style of artwork, from representational to abstract, and can include lovely “prayer for preservation” pieces to catastrophic “call to action” artwork. Each artist must write a brief paragraph that is educational and explains how the piece communicates an ecological message– be that emotional, informational, or educational. (We will help with editing and refining your message as needed.)
